![]() ![]() “Certain sugars and fructan identified during chemical analysis quantify the carbohydrate content of forages, and these are called water-soluble carbohydrates,” explained Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., a nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research. Soaking hay reduces water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) more than steaming. When inhaled, the particles can stimulate hypersensitivity in your horse’s airways, contributing to inflammatory airway disease. These particles originate from bacteria, molds, fungal spores, organic dust, minute plant structures, and insect fragments. Soaking and steaming reduce respirable dust particles significantly, sometimes completely. ![]() ![]() Check out this list of considerations when deciding what’s best for your horse. Choosing which way to prepare hay depends on several factors, including expense, ease of operation and, most importantly, the horse’s health needs. Some horses require steamed or soaked hay for their well-being. ![]() ![]() ![]() Steinbeck served as a war correspondent in England and in Italy, and much of his wartime writing (both fiction and nonfiction) was borne out of his own experiences and observations. One of his lesser known works is his short classic of resilience and civil resistance, The Moon is Down. Most readers likely associate John Steinbeck with mandatory High School assignments- The Grapes of Wrath, or perhaps Of Mice and Men-and are not aware of his work during the Second World War. The nearly uncontested conquest of the town at the center of the novella is thanks in part to a collaborator in their midst, a prominent townsperson who had set the conditions that ensured a smooth entry for the invading force. ![]() ![]() MSSSC is all about Cat's journey to the past but it's also her metaphorical journey during which she realizes it's okay to open herself up because even if she gets hurt in the process, love makes it worth it. I think the best place to start with reviewing MNSSSL is with our leading lady Cat. As a very early reader of this book, I can tell you how hard Rachel worked on this book, and I am so impressed with not only her dedication to her readers to continue Cat & Lucas's story but also the difficult but necessary changes Rachel made in order to make this the best story possible. I didn't pick the book back up until I received a digital copy on Netgalley. ![]() Also, some of the details and motivations were different. At the time, Rachel was just coming off writing Cane's story in Seven Day Fiancé, and Lucas, while darling, was sounding a little too much like a 30 year old man. ![]() I actually got to beta MNSSSL very early on in its existence. ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, maybe you’ve never ever wanted to take a linguistics course. I’d been hoping to learn more about English. To give you a little backstory, when I was in college at Auburn, the English department offered a course entitled “History of the English Language.” To most people that sounds incredibly boring, but by the time I graduated, I was sincerely disappointed that they never offered the course while I was there. Well, I’m back with another of his books to share, and this one was right up my alley as an English teacher. I’ve written about Bryson on the blog before–I reviewed his One Summer and his two books on British travel, as well as mentioning his hilarious book A Walk in the Woods this past summer. ![]() One of the last books I read in 2016 was The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course, she was right: a love affair can be wonderful but a courtship is far more enduring. Moving in with Nina is the perfect arrangement for lovelorn George, but he would never expect a more complicated relationship in store for him. Toward the end of a calamitously imperfect relationship, George, a kindergarten teacher, was kicked out by his selfish, philandering lover, Robert, George found himself at the door of Nina, a feminist who is working for her dissertation in psychology. ![]() Like his other works, The Object of My Affection is largely about relationships and the family in the context of the changing parameters of gay-straight relations.
